Period pains can occur during menstruation. They are similar to the PMS signs before the period. They can overlap or the PMS signs can replace the period pain.
A distinction is made between primary and secondary menstrual pain. Primary dysmenorrhoea is the pain that begins in the first year after menarche and usually does not indicate a disease. Secondary period pains, also called acquired dysmenorrhoea, are complaints that a woman did not have before and are often caused by a gynaecological disease.

Abdominal pain/cramps
Abdominal cramps during menstruation can be caused, among other things, by the muscular movements of the uterus, which occur in waves (similar to childbirth) to allow the tissue to separate from the uterus.
Another cause can also be endometriosis, for example. Important: Any pain is not normal, must be carefully observed and must not be played down.
Water retention
One of the causes is the ratio of estrogen and progesterone before/during the period.
For example, the breasts, hands, ankles, feet or legs can be bloated and swollen.
This can quickly increase body weight by 1-4 kilos, but the water is removed again during the first days of the period.
Skin impurities
Some women have a few pimples, others have to deal with hormonal acne. These are mostly subterranean pimples, especially on the chin and in the lower half of the face. This is caused by hormones and can also occur when hormones are discontinued or due to PCO syndrome.
Back pain
These are usually triggered by muscle tension. Because the strong cramps in the uterus can affect the surrounding muscles and radiate into the lower back (lumbar region) and become noticeable through back pain.
Mood swings
Irritable, grumpy mood, tense, fears and brooding. Hormones also play a major role here. From the moment you jump in, the happiness hormone serotonin in your body begins to drop and reaches its lowest point just before your period starts.
Headache/migraine
This is the case for some women whose organism reacts sensitively to hormonal changes, because estrogen drops before the period. The pain can be so severe that it is also accompanied by diarrhea and vomiting.
